Mixed forestThe mix in this area of the forest has maples along with other hardwoods. It also contains eastern hemlock and white pine. Note the debris on the forest floor mostly of young trees and branches.

The Bate TrapA forest in north eastern Queens County. Deer hunting with carrots as bate and a hunters blind close by to camouflage the hunters. The carrot stash is also being watched by a wifi critter cam.

Coniferous ForestEastern hemlock and pine forests often enclose the canopy, reducing the sun's rays from reaching the ground which creates a moister and warmer environment. This enables a soft blanket of green mosses to grow on the forest floor.

Goldsmith LakeThis a spectacular lake to explore by canoe. The day we were on the lake there wasn't another person to be seen, no vehicles to be heard, no motor boats whizzing by and only when we first arrived did we hear an airplane off in the distance. An incredible peaceful day highlighted by the fall colours and the reflective calmness on the lake.

Hog’s Lake TrailThis hardwood birch (on the right) became locked into the roots of the coniferous tree on the left. At one time there may have been another tree in front of the two that has since separated and fell away. It is also common for the roots of white birch trees to grow above the forest floor as, in its seedling stage, it may have grown on a nurse log which eventually decomposed from underneath the maturing birch.

Pink Lady’s SlipperWhile the pink colour has not yet fully developed I assume it is the pink lady's slipper. I went back to see it in full bloom a week later, however there wasn't any sign of it. I assume it was eaten by a deer or other animal in the area.

Acadian SucessionWhite birch tend to live between 60-70 years and a few may live to 140. In this forest many of the birches are dying. I estimate that many of the white birches in this forest are between 80 and a 100 years.
